Significant signs

What do teachers, pupils and signage have in common? In their own unique ways, they are often the unsung heroes of everyday life! From signposts and signs to pictograms and signage – wayfinding guides us through the labyrinths of everyday life, providing orientation and order amidst the chaos. It serves not only as an aesthetic element, but also as an indispensable source of information that guides us safely through complex environments – as is the case at the BZM in Markdorf near Lake Constance, where we were able to enhance the site with a well-designed wayfinding system integrated into the existing architecture and surroundings.

Significant signs

School life is a colourful affair, so a clear structure is needed. In this way, important information is presented, inch by inch, in a simple and stylish manner, from the outside in, at various levels – at all key points. The design is also characterised by minimalist graphic elements, reflected in both the typography and the icons. Existing façade structures on ceilings, floors, walls and freestanding columns are skilfully incorporated and combined with new signage elements. The wayfinding system makes it easy to find your way both inside and outside the school building. The clear and well-thought-out layout provides orientation and supports efficient navigation for pupils, teachers and visitors alike.

For a stronger sense of identity

The materials chosen are inspired by the existing architecture and blend seamlessly with the building’s design language. They were also selected for their ease of handling and processing. The design is dominated by oak elements, translucent privacy films and white lettering on powder-coated sheet steel. A highlight of the wayfinding system are the glass privacy screens covered with white decorative film featuring an Alpine silhouette. They visually separate the spaces whilst simultaneously forming a unifying element that establishes a connection to the region.

Meaningful sign language

What do pictograms have to do with product design? Quite a lot, if you take a look at our project for the BZM. We gave everything inside and outside the building that could and should serve as a point of reference a distinctive icon with high visibility: whether it’s the sports hall, technical rooms or sanitary facilities – the canteen or e-bike parking area. Modern yet timeless in design. A graphically distinctive hallmark that we have imprinted on the Markdorf Education Centre through our holistic graphic design concept, and which has become an integral part of the school’s corporate identity.
